Biography:

Erika Reutzel-Bechtel is an applied linguist who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy Studies from Duke University and a Master’s in Teaching English as a Second Language from Penn State.  She also holds ABD status in the doctoral program in Applied Linguistics at Penn State.  She has taught ESL at the undergraduate and graduate levels at Penn State and at the intensive English language institutes of Pine Manor College, Penn State, and Harvard University.  Ms. Reutzel-Bechtel has worked extensively as a private academic tutor for international students and also served as an Assistant International Student Advisor in the Penn State University Office of Global Programs.  She lived in the Netherlands for two years where she studied intensive Dutch and passed the State Language Exam for Dutch as a Second Language.  She is particularly interested in functional and discourse analytic approaches to language teaching and in relationships among language, culture, and identity.
